Valletta’s ‘Museums by Candlelight’ Returns on June 6
Valletta’s Streets to Sparkle with ‘Museums by Candlelight’ on June 6
Imagine Valletta’s grand architecture bathed in the soft glow of candlelight, its usually bustling streets hushed, and its museums and palaces opening their doors after dark. This enchanting scene is not a dream, but a reality that awaits us on June 6, as the next edition of ‘Museums by Candlelight’ is set to illuminate the capital.
A Night at the Museums: A Tradition Reborn
‘Museums by Candlelight’ is an annual event that has been lighting up Valletta’s nights since 2017. After a brief hiatus, it’s back, promising an evening of cultural immersion like no other. The event is organized by Heritage Malta, the national agency responsible for cultural heritage, in collaboration with the Valletta Cultural Agency.
But why the comeback now? “We believe that after the challenges faced over the past two years, people are eager for experiences that bring us together and celebrate our shared heritage,” explains Dr. Stephen Zammit Lupi, Director of Heritage Malta. “What better way to do this than by opening our museums and palaces at night, creating a magical atmosphere that makes history come alive?”
What to Expect on the Night
This year’s edition promises a delightful mix of history, art, and entertainment. Here’s a sneak peek into what you can expect:
- Grandmaster’s Palace: Step back in time as the palace’s State Rooms and Armoury are illuminated, offering a unique perspective on Malta’s rich history.
- National Museum of Archaeology: Discover Malta’s prehistoric past under the soft glow of candlelight, with interactive exhibits and guided tours.
- St. John’s Co-Cathedral: Marvel at the opulent interior of this Baroque gem, with its stunning artworks and intricate stone carvings.
- Street Performances and Music: Valletta’s streets will come alive with street performances, music, and roaming entertainers, creating a festive atmosphere.
And the best part? Entry to all participating museums and attractions will be free of charge. “We want to make culture accessible to everyone,” adds Dr. Zammit Lupi. “That’s why we’ve made this event free, so that everyone can enjoy a night out in Valletta’s museums.”
Getting There and Planning Your Night
Valletta will be car-free on the night of the event, so plan your journey accordingly. Public transport will be available, and there will be park-and-ride facilities from the Marsa Sports Complex and the Ta’ Qali National Park. Once in Valletta, you can explore at your leisure, with no fixed route or schedule.
Remember to dress warmly, as it can get chilly in Valletta after dark. Comfortable shoes are also a must, as you’ll be doing a lot of walking. And don’t forget to bring a torch or use your phone’s flashlight to navigate the darker areas.
So, mark June 6 in your diaries, Valletta. A night of magic, history, and culture awaits. See you there!
