Man Remanded After Alleged Violent Sexual Assault in Qormi
In the quiet Maltese town of Qormi, known for its traditional bakeries and the iconic Ta’ Ħagrat Tower, an unsettling incident has shaken the community. A man, identified by sources as 35-year-old Joseph Vella, was remanded in custody on Tuesday following allegations of a violent sexual assault on his former partner.
Allegations and Arrest
The alleged incident occurred on Sunday evening at the couple’s former residence in Triq l-Indipendenza, Qormi. According to a statement released by the police, the woman, in her late twenties, reported that she was physically and sexually assaulted by her former partner. The woman was reportedly left with visible injuries and was immediately taken to Mater Dei Hospital for medical treatment.
Vella was arrested on Monday morning following a tip-off from the public. He was subsequently charged with rape, grievous bodily harm, and criminal damage. During his arraignment at Mgarr Court, the prosecution requested that Vella be remanded in custody, citing the gravity of the charges and the risk of reoffending. Magistrate Joe Mifsud agreed, and Vella was remanded in custody pending further investigations.
Community Reaction and Support
News of the alleged assault has sparked outrage and concern among Qormi residents. Many have taken to social media to express their support for the victim and their disgust at the alleged crime. “This is not the Qormi we know and love,” commented one resident on Facebook. “Our town should be a safe place for everyone, especially women.”
The local council has also issued a statement condemning the alleged assault. “We are shocked and saddened by these allegations,” the statement read. “We urge anyone who has been a victim of domestic violence to seek help and report it to the authorities.” The council has also offered their support to the victim and her family.
