Valletta Contemporary Unveils 2025 Vision

Valletta Contemporary: Charting the Future of Maltese Art

Imagine this: you’re strolling along Republic Street, the sun casting a warm glow on the historic buildings of Valletta. You turn a corner and find yourself face-to-face with a vibrant mural, a stark contrast to the city’s Baroque architecture. This isn’t a dream; it’s Valletta Contemporary, Malta’s leading contemporary art space, and it’s got big plans for the future.

Reflecting on the Past, Looking Towards 2025

Tucked away in a 16th-century palace, Valletta Contemporary has been a beacon of modern art in Malta since 2017. Now, they’re taking a moment to reflect on their journey so far and look ahead to 2025 with a new publication, ‘VC2025: A Vision for Contemporary Art in Malta’.

“We’ve come a long way since our inception,” says Dr. Hilda Tagiuri, Director of Valletta Contemporary. “This publication is our way of acknowledging the past while also setting our sights on the future.”

From Local Talent to Global Recognition

The publication, available both online and at the VC gallery, charts the space’s evolution from a platform for local artists to a hub that’s gained international recognition. It’s a testament to Malta’s burgeoning art scene and VC’s role in nurturing it.

“We’ve always believed in the power of art to connect people and communities,” says Tagiuri. “Our 2025 vision is about building on that, about making VC a destination for both local and international artists and audiences.”

What’s Next for Valletta Contemporary?

The ‘VC2025’ publication outlines an ambitious roadmap for the next five years. It includes plans to expand the gallery space, increase artist residencies, and host more international exhibitions. There are also plans to engage more with the local community, with outreach programs and educational initiatives.

“We want to make contemporary art accessible to everyone,” says Tagiuri. “Whether you’re an art enthusiast or a curious passerby, we want you to feel welcome at VC.”

One of the most exciting plans is the proposed ‘VC Biennale’, a major international contemporary art event planned for 2025. “It’s a big project, but we believe it’s a testament to how far we’ve come and how much potential there is in Malta’s art scene,” says Tagiuri.

So, the next time you’re exploring Valletta, keep an eye out for that vibrant mural. It’s not just a piece of art; it’s a symbol of the city’s, and Malta’s, artistic future.
