Momentum Proposes Ban on Commercial Development on Comino
Comino’s Future: Momentum Proposes Ban on Commercial Development
Standing on the shores of San Niklaw Bay, Comino, you’re greeted by the crystal-clear waters lapping against the unspoiled coastline. But what if this idyllic scene was replaced by towering hotels and bustling tourist crowds? This is the scenario that environmentalists, under the banner of Momentum, are determined to prevent.
Momentum’s Proposal: A Commercial Development Ban
Momentum, a local NGO dedicated to preserving Malta’s natural heritage, has proposed a ban on all commercial development on Comino. This tiny island, measuring just 3.5 square kilometers, is currently home to a handful of private residences and one hotel. However, with increasing interest from developers, Momentum fears that Comino could follow the path of its bigger neighbor, Gozo, and lose its unique charm.
“Comino is a rare gem in the Mediterranean,” says Dr. Andrew Borg, a spokesperson for Momentum. “It’s one of the few places left where you can still find pristine beaches and untouched nature. We want to keep it that way.”
Comino: A Sensitive Ecosystem
Comino’s appeal lies not just in its beauty, but also in its biodiversity. The island is home to several endemic species, including the critically endangered Maltese wall lizard. It’s also a crucial stopover for migratory birds. Yet, these fragile ecosystems are under threat from increased tourism and potential development.
Momentum’s proposal seeks to protect Comino’s delicate balance by banning all commercial development, including new hotels, restaurants, and shops. Instead, they propose sustainable tourism initiatives, such as eco-tours and educational programs, to showcase Comino’s unique features.
Public Consultation and Next Steps
The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) is currently conducting a public consultation on the proposed ban. Local residents, environmental groups, and the public at large have until the end of the month to submit their feedback. Momentum is encouraging everyone to voice their support for the ban.
“This is our chance to protect Comino for future generations,” says Dr. Borg. “Let’s not miss this opportunity to keep Malta’s last unspoiled island just that – unspoiled.”
The future of Comino hangs in the balance. Will it remain a tranquil oasis, or will it succumb to commercial pressures? The coming weeks will determine the island’s fate.
