Msida Metal Bar Assault: Neighborhood Feud Escalates

Imagine waking up to the sound of shattering glass and the echo of a neighbor’s enraged shouts. This was the grim reality for residents of Triq San Pawl in Msida last Tuesday. A heated argument between former housemates escalated into a violent confrontation, leaving one man accused of attacking another with a metal bar.

The accused, 32-year-old Matthew Vella, and the victim, 35-year-old Joseph Azzopardi, were once housemates in the same Msida apartment. Their relationship, however, soured over time, leading to a falling out that ended with Vella moving out. Yet, the tension persisted, as the two men remained neighbors, living just a few doors apart on Triq San Pawl.

According to witnesses, the latest argument began over a seemingly trivial matter – a parking spot. However, it quickly spiraled into a heated exchange that ended with Vella allegedly grabbing a metal bar from his garage and charging at Azzopardi.

Residents of Triq San Pawl are left shaken by the incident. Many knew Vella as a quiet, reserved man, making his alleged actions all the more shocking. “I’ve known Matthew since he was a boy,” said one neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous. “He’s always been a bit of a loner, but he’s never been violent. This is not like him.”

Vella was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with aggravated assault. He was released on bail yesterday, with the condition that he does not contact Azzopardi. Azzopardi, meanwhile, was treated for minor injuries at Mater Dei Hospital and has since been discharged.
