Residents of ten apartments at Triq il-Kbira, Naxxar, were evacuated around 10 PM on Tuesday following fears that their homes could collapse. The panic began when cracks appeared in the walls and ceilings of the still-under-construction building. Neighbours watched in horror as chunks of concrete fell from the site, located just off the main road leading to the Naxxar Church.

“We were watching TV when we heard a loud noise,” said a shaken resident who wished to remain anonymous. “We looked up and saw cracks spreading across the ceiling. We grabbed what we could and ran out.”

The incident has sparked a flurry of activity from local authorities. The Building Regulation Office has launched an investigation into the cause of the structural issues. Neighbours and residents are left wondering if the construction was carried out according to regulations and if safety checks were adequate.

“We need answers,” said a concerned resident. “We want to know if this was a one-off incident or if there are more problems hidden beneath the surface.”

Hot Malta has reached out to the construction company, Malta Developers Ltd, for comment but has not received a response at the time of publication.

For the ten families affected, life has been turned upside down. They’ve been temporarily housed in a nearby hotel, but the uncertainty of their future is taking a toll.

“We’re living in limbo,” said another resident. “We don’t know if our homes are a write-off, or if we’ll be able to move back in soon. It’s a stressful time for everyone.”

Councillor for Naxxar, Dr. Joseph Muscat, has assured residents that the local council is doing everything in its power to support those affected. “We’re working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure the safety of our residents and to find a swift resolution to this issue,” he said.
