Naxxar Tower: Momentum Calls for Safety Probe
Naxxar’s Towering Concern: Momentum Calls for Probe into Development Fears
Imagine standing at the foot of Triq San Pawl in Naxxar, a street that’s seen its fair share of change. Now, picture a 16-storey tower looming over the traditional Maltese houses. That’s the reality Naxxar residents are facing, and it’s got environmental group Momentum calling for an investigation.
Momentum is urging the Planning Authority to probe potential structural risks associated with a proposed development in the heart of Naxxar. The group’s concerns are echoed by residents who fear the tower, if built, could cast a long shadow over their community and potentially pose safety risks.
Collapse Fears: A History Repeating?
Momentum’s call for an investigation is not without precedent. In 2019, a 12-storey building in Msida collapsed during construction, raising questions about the robustness of Malta’s building regulations and enforcement. The Naxxar development, if approved, would be even taller, sparking fears of a similar disaster.
“We’ve seen what can happen when corners are cut or regulations are not enforced,” said a Momentum spokesperson. “We can’t afford to let that happen in Naxxar or any other community.”
Naxxar’s Fight: Residents United
Residents have formed a committee to fight the development, arguing that the tower would be out of character with the surrounding area. They’ve collected signatures and held public meetings, their voices echoing through the narrow streets of this historic town.
“This is about more than just one building,” said a resident. “It’s about preserving our community, our history, and our safety.”
The Planning Authority has not yet responded to Momentum’s request for an investigation. However, the authority has previously stated that all developments are subject to rigorous assessment and enforcement of building regulations.
