PL Pledges €12k Car Grants for Large Families

In the heart of Birkirkara, the bustling town square hums with life. Among the chatter, a mother of five pushes her youngest in a stroller, her eyes lighting up at the news she’s just heard. “Finally, some good news for big families like mine,” she smiles. The news? The Partit Laburista (PL) has pledged car grants of up to €12,000 for families with more than three children.

PL’s Big Family Boost

The Partit Laburista (PL) has announced a significant initiative aimed at supporting large families in Malta. In a bid to make life more manageable for parents with three or more children, the party has pledged to introduce car grants of up to €12,000. This announcement comes as part of the PL’s election manifesto, with the party promising to implement the scheme should they form the next government.

How the Scheme Works

The grant, dubbed the ‘Family Mobility Scheme’, will be means-tested to ensure it reaches those who need it most. Families with three or more children will be eligible to apply, with the grant amount varying based on their income and current car ownership. Those with no car or an old, inefficient one could receive the full €12,000, while those with newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles may receive a lesser amount.

“We understand the financial strain that large families face,” said PL spokesperson, Dr. Michael Falzon. “This scheme is about giving these families a helping hand, making their daily lives a little easier and more affordable.”

Local Impact and Practicalities

For Malta’s large families, this scheme could make a tangible difference. In towns like Żebbuġ and Żurrieq, where families are often larger, the grant could enable parents to buy a reliable, fuel-efficient car, reducing transport costs and opening up new opportunities for work and leisure.

But what about the practicalities? The scheme is still in the planning stages, but Dr. Falzon hinted at some details. “We’re looking at a simple, streamlined application process. We want to make it as easy as possible for families to access this support,” he said. The grant could be used towards the purchase of a new or used car, with a list of approved, eco-friendly models to be drawn up.

the scheme is not just about cars. PL has also pledged to introduce other measures to support large families, including increased child benefit payments and improved access to childcare services.

Reaction from the Ground

Back in Birkirkara, the mother of five is optimistic about the scheme. “It would make a world of difference,” she says. “A reliable car would mean I could take the kids to the beach more often, or even visit my parents in Gozo. It’s not just about the money – it’s about the freedom and flexibility a car would give us.”

Not everyone is convinced, however. A father of four from Msida, who wished to remain anonymous, raised concerns about the scheme’s fairness. “What about single parents? Or families with special needs children? They have it even tougher,” he said. PL has acknowledged these concerns and is considering additional provisions to ensure the scheme is fair and inclusive.

As the election approaches, the Family Mobility Scheme is just one of many pledges from the PL. But for Malta’s large families, it’s a significant one. It’s a promise of support, of recognition, of a little more breathing room in their busy lives.

So, what’s next? If you’re a parent of three or more, start thinking about your family’s transport needs. If you’re a voter, consider how this scheme, and others like it, could shape Malta’s future. And if you’re PL, it’s time to start planning – because if elected, you’ve got a lot of cars to buy.
