Rain Forces PN to Cancel Event, Labour to Take Cover

Downpour Derailed: Political Parties Scramble as Rain Spoils Plans

It was meant to be a day of political rallying, but Mother Nature had other plans. Yesterday, as the first drops of rain began to fall on Malta’s capital, Valletta, the Nationalist Party (PN) was forced to cancel their event at the last minute, while the Labour Party (PL) hastily sought cover at the nearby Mediterranean Conference Centre.

PN’s Rainy Day Cancellation

The PN had planned a grand event at the Triton Fountain, with party leader Bernard Grech set to deliver a speech on the party’s vision for Malta. However, as the weather forecast predicted heavy rain, the party took the decision to cancel the event just hours before it was due to start. Grech, in a statement, expressed disappointment but assured supporters that the party’s message would continue to be heard.

PN supporters, who had gathered in their party colours, were left dampened, both literally and metaphorically. Some took to social media to express their frustration, with one user commenting, “We’re Maltese, not made of sugar – we could’ve handled a bit of rain!”

Labour Takes Cover

Meanwhile, across town, the Labour Party was facing its own weather-related challenge. As the rain began to pour, PL supporters and party officials rushed into the Mediterranean Conference Centre, where the party had a backup plan in place. Prime Minister Robert Abela, unfazed by the change in venue, delivered his speech to a packed audience, touching on the government’s achievements and plans for the future.

The contrast between the two parties’ experiences was stark. While the PN was left to rue what might have been, the PL was able to carry on with its plans, albeit in a different location. This led some to question whether the PN had been too cautious in cancelling its event, while others praised the PL’s preparedness.

Weathering the Political Storm

This isn’t the first time that Malta’s political parties have had to contend with the island’s unpredictable weather. In 2019, a sudden downpour forced the PL to cut short a rally in Mosta, while the PN has had to cancel events in the past due to high winds and heavy rain.

With Malta’s political calendar heating up ahead of the next general election, expected in 2023, both parties will be hoping for fairer weather. However, as any Maltese person will tell you, you can’t always rely on the sun to shine. Perhaps it’s time for the parties to invest in some sturdy umbrellas and raincoats?

As for the PN and PL supporters, they’ll be hoping that the weather doesn’t dampen their spirits – or their parties’ chances at the next election. After all, as the old saying goes, “Every cloud has a silver lining.”
