Firefighters Tackle Ħamrun Blaze Near Addolorata Cemetery

Flames Lick the Sky: Firefighters Battle Blaze Next to Addolorata Cemetery

Last night, the quiet of the Ħamrun suburb was shattered as a fierce fire broke out in an abandoned warehouse adjacent to the historic Addolorata Cemetery. The blaze, visible from miles away, sent plumes of smoke into the night sky, painting an eerie backdrop against the peaceful resting place.

Swift Response: Firefighters on the Scene

Emergency services received multiple calls around 9 PM, with witnesses reporting flames leaping through the roof of the derelict building. The Malta Fire Service swiftly deployed five tenders and a rescue vehicle to the scene, their sirens echoing through the streets. Firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus and hoses, battled the inferno for hours, ensuring it didn’t spread to nearby properties or the cemetery.

Among the firefighters was Mark Bugeja, a Ħamrun local with over a decade of service. “We could see the flames from our station,” he said. “We knew we had to act fast. The wind was strong, and the building was old, making it a tinderbox.”

Cause of the Fire and Aftermath

As of now, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. However, locals suspect it could be related to recent squatter activity in the area. The abandoned warehouse has been a magnet for homeless individuals and drug users, despite repeated efforts by authorities to clear it.

By dawn, the fire was extinguished, leaving behind a smoldering shell of the warehouse. Firefighters remained on site to monitor for hotspots and ensure the fire wouldn’t reignite. The charred remains of the building will now be inspected by investigators to determine the cause of the blaze.

The Addolorata Cemetery, established in the 19th century, escaped unscathed. However, the fire serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by abandoned buildings and the need for better management of such properties.
