St Julian’s Blaze Causes Traffic Chaos
Flames and Fumes: St Julian’s Restaurant Blaze Snarls Traffic
It was a scene straight out of a Hollywood film. The usually bustling St Julian’s street, Triq Għar id-Dud, was transformed into a smoky, chaotic spectacle as flames engulfed a popular restaurant, sending plumes of black smoke into the evening sky. The fire, which broke out around 8 PM on Tuesday, caused traffic to grind to a halt, with commuters and diners alike staring in disbelief as firefighters battled the blaze.
Chaos on the Streets
The fire at ‘Il-Bistrot’ restaurant, a local favorite known for its Mediterranean cuisine, quickly spread to the adjacent buildings, including a popular bakery and a clothing store. The intense heat shattered windows, and the acrid smell of burning food and materials filled the air. Witnesses reported seeing flames leap from one building to another, fueled by the strong winds.
Traffic came to a standstill as police quickly cordoned off the area. Cars were diverted onto side streets, causing confusion and delays. Pedestrians were advised to avoid the area due to the thick smoke, which could be seen from as far as Sliema and Msida. “I was driving home from work and suddenly, I saw this massive cloud of smoke,” said a shocked witness, Maria Attard. “I had no idea what was happening until I saw the flames.”
Firefighters Tame the Flames
The Malta Fire Service, alerted by numerous calls, rushed to the scene with multiple appliances. Firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, fought their way into the burning buildings, battling the flames from both inside and out. It took them over two hours to bring the fire under control, with the last pockets of flames finally extinguished around 10:30 PM.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but early reports suggest it may have started in the kitchen of the restaurant. The owners of ‘Il-Bistrot’ and the other affected businesses were left devastated, with one owner, Joseph Xuereb, saying, “We’ve worked so hard to build this place. It’s like seeing your child in flames.”
Aftermath and Support
The aftermath of the fire was a scene of devastation. The once vibrant street was left littered with debris, broken glass, and the charred remains of furniture and stock. The smell of smoke still hung heavy in the air, a stark reminder of the night’s events. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, with only minor smoke inhalation affecting a few firefighters.
In the wake of the fire, the local community has rallied around the affected businesses. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the owners rebuild, with many pledging their support. The Malta Tourism Authority has also offered assistance, with a spokesperson saying, “We’re committed to helping these businesses get back on their feet as soon as possible.”
As for the future, the owners are determined to rebuild. “This is our livelihood, our passion,” said Xuereb. “We won’t let this set us back. We’ll be back, bigger and better.”
