Birkirkara Scaffolding Collapse Injures Workers
Scaffolding Collapse at Birkirkara Recycling Plant Injures Workers
As the sun rose over Birkirkara’s industrial zone this morning, a chilling sight greeted workers at the Recycle Malta facility. A towering scaffolding structure, a familiar part of the skyline, had crumbled like a house of cards, leaving several workers injured and a community shaken.
The Accident: A Close Call
The incident occurred around 7:30 AM, as workers were preparing for another day of sorting and recycling. Eyewitnesses described the scaffolding, which stood at least 15 meters tall, suddenly giving way, sending a cascade of metal and debris crashing down. “It was like a slow-motion nightmare,” said Joe, a nearby shop owner who wished to remain anonymous.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, finding three workers trapped under the wreckage. They were extricated and immediately transported to Mater Dei Hospital, where they are currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Safety Concerns and Regulatory Oversight
This is not the first time Recycle Malta has faced safety concerns. In 2019, the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) issued the company a warning following a minor incident involving a conveyor belt. “We’ve been raising eyebrows about their safety measures for some time now,” said a source within OHSA, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Recycle Malta, however, maintains a strong safety record. “We take the safety of our workers extremely seriously,” said a spokesperson for the company. “We are cooperating fully with OHSA and will conduct our own internal investigation to determine the cause of this incident.”
Community Reaction and
News of the accident spread quickly through Birkirkara, with many residents expressing concern and solidarity with the injured workers. “It’s a scary thought, something like this happening so close to home,” said Maria, a local resident. “We hope the workers make a full recovery.”
As the investigation into the cause of the collapse continues, one thing is clear: safety must remain a top priority. “We cannot let incidents like this happen again,” said Birkirkara Mayor Doris Abela. “We will be working closely with Recycle Malta and OHSA to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to prevent such accidents in the future.”
In the meantime, the community of Birkirkara stands united, hoping for a swift recovery for the injured workers and a return to normalcy for the recycling facility that plays such a vital role in their community.
