Chaos in Valletta: Seven Injured as Driver Plows into Pedestrians
In the heart of Malta’s capital, the usually bustling Republic Street was transformed into a scene of chaos and panic yesterday afternoon. A car, seemingly out of control, mounted the pavement and plowed into a group of pedestrians, leaving seven injured and the city’s residents reeling.
Scene of Horror in Valletta’s Tourist Hub
The incident occurred around 3 PM, near the iconic Grandmaster’s Palace, a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Witnesses described a scene of utter confusion as the car, a silver Ford Focus, suddenly veered off the road and onto the pavement, striking several people before coming to a halt.
Among the injured were four tourists, two from Italy and two from France, who were visiting the historic city. The other three were Maltese residents, including a young mother who was pushing her baby in a pram at the time of the incident.
Emergency Services Rush to the Scene
Within minutes, the area was swarmed by emergency services. Police quickly cordoned off the scene, while paramedics tended to the injured. The driver, a 32-year-old Maltese man, was arrested at the scene and is currently being held for questioning.
Dr. Matthew Pace, a doctor who was nearby and among the first to respond, described the scene as “utter chaos.” He praised the quick response of the emergency services, saying, “They were on the scene within minutes, and their swift action likely saved lives.”
Investigation Underway
Superintendent Keith Micallef, leading the investigation, told Hot Malta that they are treating the incident as a case of dangerous driving. He urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward.
Prime Minister Robert Abela visited the injured in Mater Dei Hospital later in the evening, expressing his shock and solidarity with the victims and their families. He promised a thorough investigation and reassured the public that such incidents will not be tolerated.
In the meantime, Valletta’s usually vibrant atmosphere was replaced by a somber mood last night, with many residents and businesses expressing their shock and condolences on social media.
