Rape Suspect’s Bold Escape Bid in Valletta
Rape Suspect’s Bold Escape Attempt in Heart of Valletta
In the bustling heart of Valletta, Malta’s capital city, a dramatic scene unfolded yesterday as a rape suspect attempted to evade justice in broad daylight. The man, identified as 35-year-old Maltese national Joseph Xuereb, was rearrested after a daring escape attempt that saw him dash through the historic streets, leaving a trail of shock and awe among passersby.
Escape Bid in Valletta’s Busiest Hour
Xuereb’s escape bid happened around noon, during Valletta’s peak lunch hour. Witnesses reported seeing him sprinting down Republic Street, the city’s main thoroughfare, towards the iconic City Gate. His sudden dash caused a commotion, with pedestrians scattering and shopkeepers rushing out to see what the fuss was about.
“I was just closing my shop for lunch when I saw him running like his life depended on it,” said Maria Azzopardi, a local shopkeeper. “He nearly knocked over an elderly woman. It was chaos for a moment.”
Community Response and Rearrest
The quick thinking of bystanders and the swift response of the Malta Police Force prevented Xuereb from getting far. A group of locals, including a few tourists, gave chase and managed to corner him near the Siege Bell Memorial, a historic landmark near the City Gate. Their timely intervention allowed police officers, who were quickly alerted, to apprehend him without further incident.
“We’re proud of how our community came together to help apprehend this suspect,” said Inspector David Azzopardi of the Malta Police Force. “Their quick thinking and bravery helped us bring Xuereb back into custody swiftly and safely.”
Xuereb’s Previous Charges and Upcoming Trial
Xuereb was initially arrested last month following allegations of rape. He was released on bail pending trial but was required to sign in at the police station daily. His escape attempt comes just weeks before his trial is set to begin at the Criminal Court in Valletta.
Magistrate Dr. Donatella Frendo Dimech has since ordered Xuereb to be remanded in custody following his rearrest. His trial is expected to proceed as scheduled, with the next hearing set for early next month.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the seriousness of the charges Xuereb faces and the importance of the justice system in ensuring that such allegations are thoroughly investigated and addressed.
