Panic in Valletta: Seven Injured as Driver Plows into Pedestrians
It was a scene of chaos and terror on Republic Street in Valletta yesterday afternoon. A driver, later identified as an Italian tourist, lost control of his vehicle and plowed into a crowd of pedestrians, leaving seven injured and the historic city center in shock.
The Incident
Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred around 3 PM, near the iconic Grandmaster’s Palace. The driver, a 52-year-old man from Milan, was reportedly driving a rented car when he suddenly accelerated, mounting the pavement and crashing into a group of people.
Seven people were injured, with two in critical condition. They were rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where doctors are working tirelessly to stabilize their conditions.
Local Reaction
Valletta residents and visitors alike were left shaken by the incident. “I was having a coffee at one of the cafes nearby,” said local resident Maria Grech. “I heard the screeching of tires and then screams. It was terrifying.”
Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo visited the scene and the injured at Mater Dei. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families,” he said. “We’re doing everything we can to assist them and ensure their safety.”
Investigation Underway
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. The driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and is currently being held at the Floriana Police Station. Authorities are also examining the possibility of mechanical failure or medical issues contributing to the incident.
Roads in the area were closed for several hours while emergency services worked at the scene. Republic Street, one of Valletta’s main thoroughfares, was reopened late in the evening, but traffic was still heavier than usual due to the earlier incident.
Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, stating, “Our priority is the well-being of those injured. We’re doing everything we can to support them and their families.”
This incident comes as a stark reminder of the potential dangers on our roads. As we continue to investigate the cause, let’s remember to stay vigilant and safe behind the wheel.
