Fort Chambray: Gozo’s Future National Park?
Fort Chambray: A New Dawn for Gozo’s Green Spaces?
Imagine strolling through a lush, green scene, the sun warming your face, the scent of wildflowers filling the air. Now, picture this scene in the heart of Gozo, surrounded by the island’s iconic stone walls and ancient history. This could soon be a reality as Momentum Malta has proposed turning Fort Chambray into Gozo’s first national park.
A Breath of Fresh Air for Gozo
Gozo, the sister island of Malta, is known for its unique charm, rich history, and stunning landscapes. Yet, it’s no secret that the island has been grappling with urban sprawl and a lack of green spaces. Enter Fort Chambray, a 18th-century fort that has stood empty and underutilized for decades. Momentum Malta’s proposal aims to transform this historic site into a vibrant, eco-friendly hub that locals and tourists alike can enjoy.
“We envision Fort Chambray as a green lung for Gozo,” says Marc Galea, a spokesperson for Momentum Malta. “A place where people can connect with nature, learn about our heritage, and enjoy a wide range of recreational activities.”
From Fort to Park: A Plan Takes Shape
The proposed national park would span over 20 hectares, including the fort’s surrounding land. The plan includes restoring the fort’s historic buildings, creating walking and cycling paths, installing eco-friendly infrastructure, and even establishing a small visitor center.
“We want to create a space that’s both educational and entertaining,” explains Galea. “Visitors could learn about Gozo’s history, its flora and fauna, and even enjoy cultural events and exhibitions.”
The project also promises to create jobs, both during the construction phase and afterwards, in the form of park maintenance and visitor services.
A Green Future for Gozo
Momentum Malta’s proposal has sparked excitement among Gozo’s residents and environmentalists. “This is a fantastic opportunity to breathe new life into Fort Chambray and create a much-needed green space for Gozo,” says Joe Borg, a local environmental activist.
However, the project isn’t without its challenges. Funding, public consultation, and potential archaeological discoveries could all impact the timeline and final design. But Momentum Malta remains optimistic, with Galea stating, “We’re committed to making this happen. We believe Fort Chambray can become Gozo’s crown jewel, a symbol of the island’s commitment to heritage, nature, and sustainability.”
