Man Jailed 8 Years for Violent Armed Robbery, Home Invasion in Birkirkara
In a dramatic turn of events, a local man was sentenced to eight years in prison yesterday for his role in a violent armed robbery and home invasion that shocked the quiet streets of Birkirkara.
Armed Robbery Shakes Birkirkara
In the early hours of a chilly January morning, the usually peaceful Triq San Gwann was disrupted by a terrifying ordeal. A masked man, later identified as 32-year-old Joseph Xuereb, forced his way into the home of a elderly couple, brandishing a knife and demanding valuables. The couple, both in their seventies, were left traumatized, with the wife requiring hospital treatment for shock.
Police Pursuit and Arrest
Xuereb’s crime spree didn’t end there. After fleeing the scene, he attempted to rob a nearby convenience store on Triq San Ġużepp. However, the store owner raised the alarm, and Xuereb was forced to flee empty-handed. A high-speed chase ensued, with Xuereb leading police on a wild pursuit through the narrow streets of Birkirkara before being apprehended near the Old Church.
Justice Served
Xuereb pleaded guilty to charges of armed robbery, aggravated burglary, and possession of a knife in a public place. During the sentencing at the Criminal Court in Valletta, the judge described Xuereb’s actions as “callous and cowardly,” stating that such crimes would not be tolerated in Malta. The court also ordered Xuereb to pay €10,000 in compensation to the couple he robbed.
Xuereb’s sentencing has been welcomed by the local community and police, who have praised the swift action taken in apprehending the criminal. Inspector Mario Azzopardi, who led the investigation, stated, “Today’s sentence sends a clear message that such violent crimes will not be tolerated in Malta. Our community is safe thanks to the swift action of our officers.”
