Imagine this: you’re unpacking your weekly groceries from Lidl, ready to whip up a storm in your kitchen. Suddenly, you remember the recall alert you saw on Facebook. You rush to check your receipt, your heart pounding. Is the product you just bought one of the recalled items?

The Recall: Lidl Malta Acts Swiftly

Lidl Malta has issued a voluntary recall of specific batches of their ‘Growers Selection’ mixed frozen berries. The move comes after the Maltese Food Safety Authority (FSA) warned of a potential contamination risk with Hepatitis A. The affected batches were sold between 14th February and 23rd March 2023.

“We take food safety extremely seriously,” said a spokesperson for Lidl Malta. “As soon as we were informed of the potential risk, we acted swiftly to remove the affected products from our shelves.”

What Products Are Affected?

The recalled product is the ‘Growers Selection’ Mixed Frozen Berries (400g), with the following batch codes and best-before dates:

    • Batch code: L1170001, Best-before: 31.03.2024
    • Batch code: L1170002, Best-before: 31.03.2024
    • Batch code: L1170003, Best-before: 31.03.2024

If you have any of these products at home, do not consume them. Instead, return them to your nearest Lidl store for a full refund.

Hepatitis A: What You Need to Know

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver. It’s usually spread through contaminated food or water. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, and jaundice. If you’ve consumed the recalled product and experience these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Prevention is key. The FSA advises thorough cooking of frozen berries and proper hand hygiene when handling them. “Always wash your hands before and after handling food,” said a spokesperson. “And remember, cooking food thoroughly can kill any viruses that may be present.”

For more information, contact the FSA’s helpline on 2292 4000 or visit their website at foodsafety.gov.mt.

Stay safe, Malta. Let’s keep our island’s food scene thriving, but always with a healthy dose of caution.
