Man Jailed 8 Years for Violent Armed Robbery, Home Invasion in Birkirkara
In the early hours of a balmy Maltese summer morning, a quiet residential street in Birkirkara was shattered by the sound of breaking glass and desperate cries for help. The peaceful neighbourhood was under siege, as a violent armed robbery unfolded, leaving residents terrified and a family’s home invaded.
Armed and Dangerous
The man at the centre of this chilling incident, 32-year-old Matthew Vella, was sentenced to eight years in prison this week. Vella, armed with a knife and a screwdriver, forced his way into the home of a local couple in the early hours of June 15, 2021. The couple, in their 60s, were asleep when Vella broke in through a kitchen window, causing a commotion that woke them up.
“I woke up to the sound of breaking glass,” the victim, who wished to remain anonymous, told Hot Malta. “When I saw a man with a knife in our kitchen, I thought we were going to die.”
Terrifying Minutes
The couple was tied up and threatened by Vella, who demanded money and valuables. The ordeal lasted for over an hour, with the victims fearing for their lives. “He kept saying he would kill us if we didn’t give him what he wanted,” the victim recalled. “We were so scared, we just wanted it to end.”
Neighbours, alerted by the commotion, called the police. A swift response from the Malta Police Force led to Vella’s arrest at the scene. The stolen items, including jewellery and cash, were recovered.
Justice Served
Vella pleaded guilty to charges of armed robbery, theft, and causing criminal damage. In his sentencing, Judge Antonio Mizzi described Vella’s actions as “cowardly and despicable,” stating that the sentence should serve as a deterrent to others who might consider such crimes.
“Today, we can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that justice has been served,” the victim said. “But we’ll never forget the terror we felt that night. We hope that no one else has to go through what we did.”
