Valletta’s Museums to Illuminate History on June 6

Imagine the ancient walls of Valletta, the ‘City of Stone’, bathed in the soft glow of candlelight. This enchanting scene is not a distant dream but a reality that unfolds every year in the form of ‘Museums by Candlelight’. This year, the event is set to captivate history enthusiasts and locals alike on June 6.

Unveiling History in a New Light

Organised by Heritage Malta, the event offers an exclusive opportunity to explore some of the island’s most significant museums after sunset. From the National Museum of Archaeology to the Grandmaster’s Palace, each venue will open its doors to the public, illuminating its rich history and cultural heritage in a unique and captivating way.

But why the candlelight? According to Heritage Malta, the event is not just about creating a romantic atmosphere. It’s about providing a different perspective on our past. “Candlelight changes the way we perceive objects and spaces,” explains a spokesperson. “It slows us down, encourages us to look closer, and fosters a deeper connection with our history.”

What to Expect on the Night

Last year, over 2,000 people flocked to the event, transforming Valletta’s usually bustling streets into a serene, historic wonderland. This year, visitors can expect a similar magical experience, with each museum offering a unique experience.

At the National Museum of Archaeology, you’ll find the ancient streets of Roman Melite illuminated, while the Grandmaster’s Palace will host a special exhibition on the Knights of St John. The National War Museum will offer a poignant reminder of Malta’s role in World War II, and the Malta Postal Museum will provide a fascinating insight into the island’s postal history.

But it’s not just about the museums. The event also offers a chance to explore Valletta’s historic streets, with live music and street performances adding to the festive atmosphere. Food and drink stalls will be set up along Republic Street, offering a chance to sample some of Malta’s finest local produce.

And the best part? Entry to all museums is free. Yes, you read that right. This is one event where you can indulge your cultural curiosity without breaking the bank.

Planning Your Night

While the event is free, it’s a good idea to plan your evening in advance. Museums will open their doors at 6 pm and close at 10 pm, giving you plenty of time to explore. However, some venues may have long queues, so it’s worth prioritising which museums you want to visit.

Public transport will be running late to accommodate the event, but if you prefer to drive, there are several car parks in Valletta, including the ones at the Valletta Waterfront and the Great Siege Monument.

And if you’re wondering what to wear, the dress code is smart casual. After all, you’ll be walking through some of Malta’s most historic buildings, so it’s a good idea to dress respectfully.
