Malta’s New Voice: Sarah Azzopardi’s Politics of Values

Politics of Values: A Conversation with Malta’s Newest Voice

Imagine standing in the heart of Valletta, the sun casting a warm glow on the Grandmaster’s Palace. Now, picture a young, passionate individual, not much older than the teenagers lounging at the nearby Barrakka Gardens, but with a determination in their eyes that could rival the city’s ancient walls. This is the scene that unfolds when you meet Sarah Azzopardi, the 25-year-old political newcomer who’s been making waves with her ‘politics of values’ campaign.

From Student Activism to Political Pulpit

Sarah’s journey is a testament to the power of youth activism. Born and raised in Msida, she cut her teeth in student politics at the University of Malta. “I saw issues that needed addressing, from affordable education to environmental concerns,” she recalls, her voice echoing in the historic streets. “I realized that politics was the tool to drive change.”

Fast forward a few years, and Sarah finds herself on the cusp of a political career. Her party, Progressives, is a new voice in Malta’s political scene, advocating for a values-driven approach to governance. “We’re not just about policies,” she explains. “We’re about the principles that guide those policies.”

Upholding Values in a Changing Malta

So, what are these values that Sarah and her party are championing? Top of the list is transparency. “Malta’s had its share of scandals,” she says, referring to the recent corruption allegations that have rocked the island nation. “We believe in open governance, in holding our leaders accountable.”

Environmental sustainability is another key value. Sarah points to the ongoing debate over development projects, like the proposed tallest building in Europe in St. Julian’s. “We need to balance progress with preservation,” she argues. “Our children deserve a Malta that’s not just prosperous, but also green and clean.”

Education and social justice round out Sarah’s values-driven platform. She wants to see more investment in public education and a fairer distribution of wealth. “Malta’s a small island,” she says, “but that doesn’t mean we can’t dream big and strive for a more equal society.”

Challenges Ahead: Can Values Trump Experience?

Sarah’s ideals are inspiring, but she faces an uphill battle. Malta’s political scene is dominated by two long-established parties, and many voters are skeptical of newcomers. “I understand the skepticism,” Sarah admits. “But I also believe that Malta’s ready for a change. We’re ready for a politics that’s about more than just power and influence.”

She’s also aware that her youth and lack of political experience could be seen as liabilities. But Sarah sees it differently. “I’m not a career politician,” she says. “I’m a young Maltese woman who’s seen the challenges our generation faces. I’m running because I want to be part of the solution.”

As we wrap up our conversation, Sarah looks out over the Grand Harbour, her expression determined. “Malta’s at a crossroads,” she says. “We can either continue down the same path, or we can choose a different road, one guided by values and principles. I believe in the power of choice. I believe in the power of values.”
