Teen’s Face Slashed in Paceville Brawl: Witness Questioned
In the early hours of Saturday, the usually bustling streets of Paceville fell silent as an ambulance rushed a 19-year-old local teen to Mater Dei Hospital, his face gashed open in a brutal brawl. The incident has left the tight-knit community of this once-sleepy town on the north-eastern coast of Malta reeling.
What Happened on St. George’s Bay Street?
Eyewitnesses report a heated argument escalating into a full-blown fight outside a popular bar on St. George’s Bay Street, the heart of Paceville’s nightlife. The teen, who has asked not to be named, was caught in the crossfire, his face slashed by a broken bottle. He underwent emergency surgery and is now in stable condition.
“It was chaos,” said a nearby resident who wished to remain anonymous. “We’ve had our fair share of rowdy nights here, but this was something else. It’s scary to think something like this could happen just steps away from our homes.”
Witness Questioned as Police Investigate
Police have since questioned a witness, a 25-year-old man from Msida, in connection with the incident. While no arrests have been made, Inspector Ian Abela from the St. Julian’s Police Station confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
“We are treating this as a serious incident,” Inspector Abela said. “We urge anyone with information to come forward. We need to send a clear message that this kind of violence will not be tolerated in our community.”
Paceville: A Changing scene
Once a quiet fishing village, Paceville has evolved into Malta’s premier entertainment district, drawing tourists and locals alike with its vibrant nightlife. However, the increase in crowds and late-night revelry has also brought challenges, including an uptick in petty crime and public disorder.
Local councillor, Joseph Muscat, acknowledged the concerns of residents. “We’re working with the police and other stakeholders to find a balance between the nightlife that brings so much business to our town and the quality of life of our residents,” he said.
In the wake of the incident, Paceville’s bars and clubs have been urged to review their security measures. “We need to ensure that our patrons can enjoy a night out without fearing for their safety,” said a spokesperson for one of the bars involved.
