Malta’s Third Interconnector: Tender Issued for Powerful Link

Malta’s Energy Future: Third Interconnector Tender Kicks Off

Imagine standing on the bustling street of Triq il-Mediterran, the sun beating down on the Mediterranean Sea just metres away. Now, picture a future where Malta’s energy needs are met not just by the sun above, but also by the power of its neighbours. That future is one step closer, as a basic engineering tender for the third interconnector has just been issued.

Connecting to Sicily: A Powerful Link

The third interconnector, a power cable linking Malta to Sicily, is set to bolster our energy security and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources. It’s a project that’s been on the drawing board for some time, but now, with the tender issued, it’s moving from talk to tangible action.

The tender, issued by the Malta Energy and Water Services Regulatory Authority (EWURA), seeks a contractor to design, manufacture, install, and commission the submarine power cable. This cable, stretching around 200 kilometres, will connect Malta’s electricity grid to that of Sicily, providing a vital link to the European power system.

What Does This Mean for Malta?

For Malta, this interconnector is more than just a power cable. It’s a strategic investment that opens up new opportunities for our energy sector. Here’s what locals can expect:

    • Energy Security: The interconnector will reduce Malta’s reliance on expensive and polluting diesel-generated power, enhancing our energy security.
    • Renewable Integration: It will facilitate the integration of more renewable energy, helping Malta meet its EU targets and reducing our carbon footprint.
    • Market Access: It will provide access to the European power market, opening up new trading opportunities and potentially leading to lower electricity prices for consumers.

: A Greener Future

As we look to the future, the third interconnector is just one piece of the puzzle in Malta’s transition to a low-carbon economy. The tender’s issuance is a significant step forward, but there’s still much work to be done. From the successful completion of this project to the continued development of our renewable energy sector, Malta’s green future is within our grasp.

As Dr. ing. David Attard, CEO of Enemalta, puts it, “The third interconnector is a critical project for Malta’s energy future. It will enhance our energy security, facilitate the integration of renewables, and provide access to the European power market. We look forward to working with the successful tenderer to deliver this project for the benefit of all Maltese.”
