Three New Priests Bring Hope to Malta’s Church

Three New Faces of Hope: Ordination in Valletta

As the sun cast a golden glow over the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta, three young men took their first steps into a new life. Dressed in their finest, they walked through the cobbled streets of our historic capital, not as mere visitors, but as newly ordained priests of the Catholic Church.

From the Oldest to the Newest: A Timeless Tradition

The ordination ceremony, held in the grandeur of St. John’s Co-Cathedral, was a blend of ancient ritual and modern relevance. The cathedral, a masterpiece of Maltese Baroque, stood as a testament to our island’s rich religious heritage. Yet, the three new priests—Fr. Matthew Azzopardi, Fr. David Attard, and Fr. Mark Attard—brought a fresh energy and hope to this timeless tradition.

For Fr. Matthew, the ordination was a culmination of years of dedication and discernment. “It’s a moment of great joy and gratitude,” he shared, his voice filled with emotion. Born and raised in Żebbuġ, a small town in the heart of Malta, Fr. Matthew’s journey is a testament to the enduring spirit of faith in our communities.

Ordination Amidst Change: A Message of Hope

The ordination of these three priests comes at a time when the Church, like the rest of the world, is navigating uncharted territories. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about rare challenges, but it has also underscored the need for hope and spiritual guidance.

Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna, who presided over the ceremony, echoed this sentiment. “In these challenging times, the Church needs priests who can bring a message of hope, of love, and of mercy,” he said, his words resonating in the hushed silence of the cathedral.

Fr. David, one of the newly ordained priests, sees his role as a source of comfort and strength. “I want to be a priest who is close to people, who listens, and who brings the joy of the Gospel to others,” he shared, his eyes reflecting a quiet determination.

: A New Chapter

The ordination of these three priests is more than just a religious ceremony. It’s a symbol of renewal, of hope, and of the Church’s commitment to serve the people of Malta. As Fr. Mark, the youngest of the trio, put it, “We are ready to serve, to learn, and to grow in our new roles.”

As the ceremony drew to a close, the newly ordained priests processed out of the cathedral, their faces radiant with joy and purpose. The streets of Valletta, which had witnessed their journey thus far, now echoed with the promise of a new chapter. A chapter filled with hope, with love, and with the enduring spirit of faith that defines our island nation.
