Chaos in Valletta: Seven Injured as Driver Plows Through Pedestrians
It was a scene of chaos and panic in the heart of Malta’s capital yesterday afternoon, as a driver lost control of their vehicle and plowed through a crowded pedestrian area, injuring seven people. The incident, which occurred near the historic City Gate in Valletta, through the usually peaceful city.
Witness Accounts: A Scene of Panic
Eyewitnesses described the scene as one of sheer panic. “I was walking towards the City Gate when I heard a loud screech,” said Maria, a local resident. “I turned around and saw a car speeding towards the crowd. People were screaming and trying to get out of the way, but it all happened so fast.”
Another witness, who wished to remain anonymous, described the driver as looking “dazed and confused” behind the wheel. “The car was swerving all over the place before it finally came to a halt,” they said.
Seven Injured, None Seriously
Emergency services were quick to respond, with ambulances and police cars arriving at the scene within minutes. The injured, six adults and a child, were rushed to Mater Dei Hospital. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening, with the child being treated for minor cuts and bruises.
“We were lucky today,” said Dr. Matthew Pace, a medical officer at Mater Dei. “The injuries could have been much worse. We’re grateful that everyone is expected to make a full recovery.”
Investigation Underway
The driver, a 45-year-old man from Birkirkara, was arrested at the scene and is currently being questioned by police. While it’s too early to rule out any possibilities, early indications suggest that the incident may have been an accident caused by a medical episode behind the wheel.
Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. “We’re urging anyone who was in the area at the time to get in touch,” said Inspector Joseph Camilleri. “Any information, no matter how small, could prove crucial to our investigation.”
