Abela Challenges PL: ‘It’s Either Me or Alex Borg’
Abela’s Gamble: ‘It’s Either Me or Alex Borg. Who Do You Trust?’
Malta’s political scene was set ablaze last night as Prime Minister Robert Abela challenged Labour Party (PL) members to choose between him and party stalwart Alex Borg. The bold statement, made at a mass meeting in Ħ’Attard, has through the party and the nation, leaving many wondering what lies ahead for the ruling party.
Abela’s Challenge: A Turning Point or a Stumble?
The meeting, held at the Ħ’Attard Sports Complex, was a show of force by Abela, who has been under pressure following a series of corruption scandals that have rocked his government. With Borg, a former MP and party heavyweight, openly criticising Abela’s leadership, the Prime Minister chose to address the elephant in the room head-on.
“It’s either me or Alex Borg. Who do you trust more?” Abela asked the crowd, his voice echoing through the packed sports complex. The question, stark and direct, was a departure from the usual political rhetoric, leaving many in attendance taken aback.
Borg: The Elephant in the Room
Alex Borg, a former MP and a close ally of former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, has been a thorn in Abela’s side since he took over the party leadership in 2020. Borg has been vocal in his criticism of Abela’s handling of the party and the country, with his latest barb coming just days before the Ħ’Attard meeting.
In a Facebook post, Borg accused Abela of “destroying” the party and called on him to step down. Abela’s response at the meeting was swift and unequivocal, setting the stage for a high-stakes game of political brinkmanship.
Reactions: Divided Camp, United Nation
The challenge has sparked a divided response within the PL. Some party members have praised Abela’s directness, seeing it as a sign of strength and leadership. Others, however, have expressed concern, with one senior party official telling Hot Malta, “This is not the way to unite the party. It’s divisive and counterproductive.”
Meanwhile, the Opposition Nationalist Party (PN) has seized on the rift, with PN leader Bernard Grech accusing Abela of “putting his own interests above those of the country.” Grech called on Abela to resign, saying, “Malta deserves a prime minister who can unite, not divide.”
As the political storm rages on, one thing is clear: the PL mass meeting in Ħ’Attard has set the stage for a dramatic showdown between Abela and Borg. The question on everyone’s lips is: who will blink first?
