Car Goes Up in Flames on Triq l-Imqabba: Motorist Rescued in Dramatic Scene

In the early hours of Tuesday, a car burst into flames on Triq l-Imqabba, just metres away from the popular local bakery, Il-Forno. The dramatic scene unfolded as a motorist, driving a silver Ford Focus, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a nearby wall. Within seconds, the car was engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke billowing into the pre-dawn sky.

Quick Thinking by Bystanders Saves the Day

Luckily, a group of quick-thinking bystanders sprang into action. Among them was Joseph, a local resident who was out for his early morning jog. “I saw the car crash and then I heard the fuel tank explode,” he recalled. “I knew we had to act fast. I grabbed a fire extinguisher from the nearby garage and we managed to pull the driver out just in time.”

The driver, a 35-year-old man from nearby Żurrieq, was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital with minor injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery. The car, however, was completely destroyed in the blaze.

Fire Services Investigate Cause of Crash

The Malta Police Force and the Fire and Rescue Services are currently investigating the cause of the crash. While it’s too early to determine the exact cause, eyewitnesses suspect that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. “He was driving really fast and then suddenly, he just lost control,” said Maria, another eyewitness.

Inspector Mario Vella from the Malta Police Force urged drivers to take extra care on the roads, especially during early morning hours. “Fatigue is a common cause of road accidents. We remind all drivers to take regular breaks and avoid driving if they feel tired,” he said.

Local Residents React to the Incident

News of the incident spread quickly among the close-knit community of Żurrieq. Many residents expressed their relief that the driver was rescued safely. “It could have been so much worse,” said Anna, a long-time Żurrieq resident. “We’re just glad that everyone is okay.”

Others used the incident as a reminder of the importance of road safety. “We need to look out for each other on the roads,” said Tony, a local business owner. “A split second can make all the difference.”
