Drugs Seized, Man Arrested in Qormi Roadblock
Early morning commuters in Qormi were greeted with an unexpected sight today as a roadblock set up by police led to the seizure of drugs and the arrest of a man. The incident, which took place near the historic St George’s Basilica, has once again highlighted the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Malta.
Drugs and Cash Seized
According to a police spokesperson, a car was stopped at the roadblock around 7:30 AM. A search of the vehicle revealed a substantial quantity of illegal drugs, believed to be cannabis, along with a significant amount of cash. The driver, a 35-year-old man from Birkirkara, was arrested on the spot and taken into custody for further questioning.
Qormi Residents React
Residents of Qormi, known for its vibrant street life and traditional ‘festas’, expressed their concern over the incident. “We’ve always known that drugs are a problem, but to see it happening right here in our town is worrying,” said Joseph, a local shopkeeper. “I hope the police can get to the bottom of this and make our streets safer,” he added.
Others, like Maria, a retired teacher, praised the police for their vigilance. “I’ve seen the police presence increase in recent years, and it’s good to know they’re working hard to keep our community safe,” she said.
Police Operation and Local Impact
The roadblock was part of a larger police operation targeting drug trafficking in the central region. Superintendent Edwin Vass, leading the operation, stated, “We’re sending a clear message to those involved in drug trafficking. We will not tolerate this activity in our communities, and we will continue to disrupt your operations.”
Locals are hopeful that the police’s efforts will lead to a decrease in drug-related activities in the area. “We want our children to grow up in a safe environment, and that means saying no to drugs,” said Anthony, a father of two who was walking his children to school near the scene of the incident.
As the investigation continues, police are appealing to anyone with information about drug trafficking in the area to come forward.
