Turtle Tale: Life Guards and Volunteers Save Stranded Sea Creature in Little Armier

Imagine, if you will, the tranquil waters of Little Armier, a picturesque bay nestled on Malta’s northeastern coast. It’s a typical sunny afternoon, and the sea is a shimmering expanse of blue, broken only by the occasional fishing boat or sunbather’s inflatable. Suddenly, a flash of green catches the eye of a life guard on duty. It’s not a turtle-shaped float, but a real, live sea turtle, struggling in the shallow waters.

This was the scene that unfolded recently, leading to a swift and successful rescue operation involving life guards and volunteers from Nature Trust Malta. The turtle, later identified as a juvenile Loggerhead, was found entangled in a fishing net, its flippers unable to propel it back to safer, deeper waters.

Rescue in Action

The life guards, Patrick Mifsud and Matthew Aquilina, were quick to spring into action. They waded into the water, carefully approaching the distressed turtle. With the help of Nature Trust volunteers, who arrived swiftly on the scene, they managed to free the turtle from the net, a painstaking process that took over an hour.

“It was a delicate operation,” recalls Mifsud. “We had to be careful not to harm the turtle further. Its flippers were badly entangled, and it was exhausted from struggling.”

Rehabilitation and Release

Once freed, the turtle was taken to the Nature Trust’s rehabilitation centre in Għajn Dwieli, where it was given a clean bill of health, despite its ordeal. After a period of rest and observation, it was ready for release back into the wild.

And so, a few days later, under the watchful eyes of the volunteers and a small crowd of onlookers, the turtle was set free in the waters off Qawra Point. It swam away strongly, a testament to the successful rescue and rehabilitation effort.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers marine life faces from human activities. It also of conservation efforts and the crucial role played by volunteers and organizations like Nature Trust Malta.

As we continue to enjoy our beautiful coastline, let’s remember the creatures that call it home. Let’s respect their habitats and report any signs of distress or injury. After all, every life, no matter how small, deserves a chance to swim free.
