Il-Beżżul Bieżel 2026: Malta’s Biggest Street Party Turns 10
Il-Beżżul Bieżel: Malta’s Biggest Street Party Turns 10
It’s 10 pm on May 17, 2026, and Republic Street, Valletta, is buzzing. Not with the usual hum of tourists or the clatter of horse-drawn carriages, but with the pulsating rhythm of drums and the infectious laughter of revellers. Tonight, Malta’s capital is the epicentre of Il-Beżżul Bieżel, the island’s largest and most vibrant street party, celebrating its 10th anniversary.
From a Small Street Party to a Nationwide Celebration
In 2016, a group of friends decided to liven up a quiet Monday night in Valletta. They grabbed their drums, invited a few neighbours, and Il-Beżżul Bieżel was born. A decade later, what started as a small, spontaneous gathering has evolved into a nationwide event, drawing thousands of participants and spectators alike.
Today, Il-Beżżul Bieżel isn’t just about drums and dancing. It’s a celebration of Malta’s culture, community, and creativity. You’ll find street art workshops in St. George’s Square, traditional Maltese food stalls along Merchant Street, and live music performances in the historic courtyard of the Auberge de Castille.
Sustainability Meets Celebration
As Il-Beżżul Bieżel grows, so does its commitment to sustainability. This year, organisers have partnered with local environmental NGOs to reduce waste and promote eco-friendly practices. Participants are encouraged to bring their own reusable cups and bags, and waste stations will be set up throughout the party route.
But sustainability isn’t just about reducing waste. It’s also about preserving Malta’s cultural heritage. This year’s event will highlight Valletta’s rich history with guided tours of the city’s historic sites and traditional Maltese games in the open spaces of the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
: Il-Beżżul Bieżel Goes International
As Il-Beżżul Bieżel turns 10, organisers are looking to the future. They’re planning to take the party international, inviting drummers and dancers from around the world to join the celebrations. “We want to show the world what Malta’s all about,” says festival organiser, Joseph Camilleri. “Our culture, our community, our spirit. And we want them to bring their own spirit to our party.”
So, mark your calendars for May 17, 2026. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, whether you’re a seasoned drummer or a first-time spectator, Il-Beżżul Bieżel promises a night you won’t forget. And who knows? You might just become a part of Malta’s history.
