Nadur Basilica’s Ceiling Masterpiece Restored

Nadur’s Basilica Ceiling: A Masterpiece Reborn

Imagine standing in the heart of Nadur, Malta’s smallest town, gazing up at a ceiling that’s been silent for centuries. That’s exactly what visitors can do now, thanks to the painstaking restoration of Lazzaro Pisani’s masterpiece at the Basilica of the Assumption.

Unveiling a Hidden Gem

The ceiling, a breathtaking fresco painted in the late 17th century, has been hidden from public view for decades. Moisture and time had taken their toll, but a team of local artisans has brought it back to life. “It’s like watching a time capsule open,” says Restorer-in-Charge, Joseph Attard, as he stands in the town’s main square, Triq San Publiju.

From Darkness to Daylight

The restoration process began in 2019, funded by the Malta Arts Fund and the Nadur Local Council. The team worked meticulously, layer by layer, revealing the original vibrant colours and intricate details. “Pisani’s work is a testament to our rich history,” says Nadur Mayor, Paul Gauci, “and we’re thrilled to share it with the world again.”

The ceiling is now a stunning display of religious iconography, with scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and the Assumption. It’s a must-see for art lovers and history buffs alike, offering a unique glimpse into Malta’s Baroque past.

So, if you’re in Nadur, don’t just look up at the Basilica’s towering facade. Step inside and look up. You’ll be rewarded with a masterpiece that’s been waiting patiently to tell its story again.
