Malta Couple Charged with Pickpocketing in Valletta
Local Couple in Hot Water: Caught in Pickpocketing Spree
Imagine walking down Republic Street, the heart of Malta’s capital, when you feel a light tap on your shoulder. You turn around, expecting a friendly face, but instead, you’re met with a sheepish grin and an empty pocket. This wasn’t a scene from a movie, but a reality for several locals and tourists this past week.
Hot Malta has learned that a husband and wife duo, both residents of Msida, have been charged with pickpocketing offenses following a series of incidents in Valletta. The couple, in their mid-30s, have been identified by police as John and Maria, although their full names have not been released.
From Street to Court: The Arrest
The couple’s alleged spree came to an end on Tuesday when a quick-thinking victim raised the alarm near the Grandmaster’s Palace. Police, who were patrolling the area, swiftly apprehended the pair. According to a police spokesperson, “The couple was found in possession of several wallets and mobile phones, which they were unable to account for.”
John and Maria were subsequently charged with pickpocketing and conspiracy to commit a crime. They were remanded in custody pending their court appearance, which is scheduled for next week at the Magistrates’ Court in Valletta.
Victims Speak Out: “It Happened So Quickly”
Among the victims was Lisa, a local shopkeeper who had been out for a rare lunch break. “I felt something brush against my bag,” she recalled, “but I didn’t think anything of it until I saw the police arresting them. When I checked my bag, my wallet was gone.” Lisa, like many victims, had no idea she had been targeted until it was too late.
Another victim, Tom, a British tourist, was more fortunate. “I felt someone tugging at my pocket,” he said. “I spun around and saw this woman trying to slip something into her bag. I shouted, and that’s when the police came running.” Tom’s quick reflexes not only saved his belongings but also led to the couple’s arrest.
Police Warning: Stay Vigilant in Popular Areas
Inspector Joseph Borg, the officer in charge of the case, urged the public to remain vigilant, especially in crowded tourist areas. “Pickpocketing is a cowardly crime that targets the unsuspecting,” he said. “We encourage everyone to keep their belongings secure and to report any suspicious activity.”
The Inspector also praised the victims who came forward. “Their bravery has helped us bring these individuals to justice and send a strong message that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated in Malta.”
