Malta Mourns: Four-year-old Dies After Pool Accident
Tragedy in Birkirkara: Four-year-old loses battle after pool accident
In the quiet residential street of Triq il-Karmnu, Birkirkara, a family’s world shattered last week. Little Matthew, just four years old, slipped away from his parents’ grasp and fell into their backyard swimming pool. Five days later, the unthinkable happened. Matthew passed away, leaving the close-knit community of Birkirkara and Malta at large, grief-stricken.
An Accident Turned Tragedy
The incident occurred on a seemingly ordinary afternoon. Matthew’s parents, like many Maltese families, had set up a small pool in their backyard to beat the summer heat. In a moment’s distraction, Matthew managed to climb onto the pool’s edge and toppled in. His parents, horrified, rushed to pull him out. They performed CPR and called for an ambulance immediately.
Matthew was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remained in critical condition. For five agonizing days, the family and community held onto hope. But on Tuesday, the hospital announced that Matthew had succumbed to his injuries, sending shockwaves through Birkirkara and beyond.
A Community Mourns
Birkirkara, a town known for its vibrant community spirit, has been shrouded in grief since the news broke. Neighbors have gathered to support the family, leaving flowers and candles at the entrance of Matthew’s home. The local council has also offered its condolences, with Mayor Albert Buttigieg stating, “Our town has lost one of its brightest stars. Our hearts go out to Matthew’s family.”
This tragedy has also sparked conversations about pool safety across Malta. Many parents are reassessing their safety measures, with some considering installing pool alarms or safety covers. The Malta Resuscitation Council has reminded the public about the importance of CPR training, offering free courses to parents and guardians.
Matthew’s school, St. Joseph’s Primary in Birkirkara, has also been deeply affected. The school’s headteacher, Maria Grech, described Matthew as a “vibrant, lively little boy who will be greatly missed.” The school has organized a memorial service for Matthew, inviting the entire community to attend.
Remembering Matthew
Matthew’s family has asked for privacy during this difficult time. However, they have expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community. They have also shared a heartbreaking message, urging parents to never underestimate the danger pools pose to young children.
“We thought we were doing everything right,” Matthew’s mother said through tears. “Please, learn from our mistake. Never take your eyes off your children near water.”
