Mellieħa Minibus Fire: A Summer Safety Wake-Up Call

Fire Gutted Minibus in Mellieħa: A Reminder of Summer’s Hazards

As the summer sun sets over the picturesque Mellieħa Bay, the charred remains of a minibus serve as a stark reminder of the season’s hidden dangers. The vehicle, parked along Triq San Pawl, was engulfed in flames on Tuesday evening, leaving behind a scene of smoke and smoldering metal.

Blaze Engulfs Minibus in Heart of Mellieħa

The fire, which broke out around 8 PM, sent plumes of black smoke into the evening sky, visible from nearby streets and even the bay itself. Residents and tourists alike watched in awe and concern as firefighters battled the blaze, eventually managing to extinguish it after about an hour.

“I was walking back from the beach when I saw the smoke,” said John, a British tourist staying in Mellieħa for the week. “It was quite a sight, and a bit worrying, especially with all the people around.”

Cause of Fire Under Investigation

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but initial reports suggest it may have been an electrical fault. The minibus, owned by a local transport company, was not in use at the time of the incident.

Mellieħa’s Mayor, Dr. Deo Debattista, expressed relief that no one was injured. “We’re grateful for the quick response of our fire services,” he said. “This could have been much worse, especially with the busy summer season in full swing.”

Summer Safety Reminders

While the cause of this particular fire is still unknown, it serves as a timely reminder of the increased fire risk during the summer months. With temperatures soaring and vegetation drying out, the risk of wildfires is high, and even electrical faults can lead to devastating consequences.

Malta’s Civil Protection Department has urged the public to take extra precautions, especially when disposing of cigarettes and barbecues. They also remind the public to report any signs of smoke or fire immediately.

“Let’s not let our guard down this summer,” said a spokesperson for the department. “A moment’s carelessness can have serious consequences, as we’ve seen here in Mellieħa.”

As the sun continues to beat down on Malta’s shores, let’s remember to enjoy the summer safely. After all, no holiday snapshot is worth risking life and limb.
