Mġarr Cyclist Fight for Life: Witnesses Sought
Cyclist Fighting for Life After Mġarr Crash: What We Know So Far
In the quiet, coastal village of Mġarr, a grim scene unfolded yesterday afternoon. A cyclist, later identified as 42-year-old Maltese resident, Mark Xuereb, was found lying unconscious on Triq il-Kbira, the village’s main street, his bicycle mangled nearby. The cause? A suspected hit-and-run.
Xuereb, a passionate cyclist and father of two, was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remains in critical condition, fighting for his life. The community is reeling, and questions are swirling. Who is responsible? How did this happen in broad daylight on one of Malta’s most scenic roads?
Witnesses Sought: Piecing Together the Puzzle
Police are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the incident or have dashcam footage. According to Inspector Ian Abela, “We believe the vehicle involved is a dark-colored sedan. Any information, no matter how small, could be crucial.”
Local residents are stepping up, sharing CCTV footage and appealing to anyone who might have seen something to come forward. “Mġarr is a tight-knit community,” says Josephine Camilleri, a Mġarr resident. “We’re all shocked and want to do everything we can to help Mark and his family.”
Cycling Safety in Malta: A Growing Concern
Xuereb’s accident has once again shone a spotlight on cycling safety in Malta. With cycling enthusiasts and commuters on the rise, so too are accidents. According to the Malta Police, there were 150 cycling-related accidents in 2020 alone.
Cycling advocacy groups are calling for more to be done. “We need safer infrastructure, stricter enforcement, and better education for both drivers and cyclists,” says Matthew van der Meer, founder of Malta’s cycling advocacy group, Bike Malta.
Xuereb’s accident has also sparked a conversation about the need for better road safety in Mġarr, a popular route for cyclists due to its scenic coastal views. “We’ve been calling for traffic calming measures here for years,” says John Camilleri, a Mġarr resident and cycling enthusiast.
A Community United in Hope
As Xuereb fights for his life, the Mġarr community and cycling enthusiasts across Malta are united in hope. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Xuereb’s family, with donations pouring in from across the island.
“Mark is a fighter,” says Xuereb’s childhood friend, Daniel Azzopardi. “We’re all praying for a miracle, but we’re also determined to make sure something positive comes out of this. We can’t let another family go through what Mark’s family is going through.”
As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: the cycling community and the people of Mġarr are united in their desire for justice and their hope for Xuereb’s recovery.
