Opera Nova: Malta’s Melodious Magic Turns 2

Two Years of Melodious Magic: Celebrating Opera Nova Project

Imagine, if you will, the cobblestone streets of Valletta on a balmy summer evening. The sun dips below the Grandmaster’s Palace, casting a warm glow over the city’s historic architecture. Suddenly, the air is filled with the enchanting melodies of opera, echoing through the narrow streets. This is no dream; it’s the reality created by the Opera Nova Project, now celebrating two remarkable years of bringing world-class opera to Malta’s capital.

A Symphony of Culture and Community

The Opera Nova Project was born out of a desire to enrich Malta’s cultural scene and engage the local community with the magic of opera. Founded in 2020 by Malta-born opera singer Joseph Calleja and his wife, the project has transformed Valletta’s streets into open-air concert halls, offering free performances to all.

In its first two years, Opera Nova has presented a stunning array of operas, from Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” to Puccini’s “La Bohème”. The project has collaborated with leading opera houses, directors, and singers, bringing the best of the international opera scene to Malta’s doorstep.

Valletta’s Grand Stage

Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage site, provides the perfect backdrop for these operatic performances. The city’s historic buildings and grand squares have served as the project’s stunning stage, with the iconic St. George’s Square and the Grandmaster’s Palace among the favoured venues.

But Opera Nova isn’t just about the music. It’s about creating a shared experience, a sense of community. “We wanted to make opera accessible to everyone,” says Calleja. “To see people of all ages, from all walks of life, enjoying these performances together – that’s what makes Opera Nova truly special.”

: A New Act

As Opera Nova looks to the future, plans are underway to expand the project’s reach. “We’re exploring new venues, new operas, and new ways to engage with our audience,” reveals Calleja. “We want to continue to grow, to evolve, and to bring even more people together through the power of opera.”

Upcoming performances include a production of Verdi’s “Rigoletto” in the stunning setting of the Upper Barrakka Gardens. Mark your calendars, Malta – the show’s about to begin.

Quote

“Opera Nova is more than just a project; it’s a passion. It’s about sharing the beauty of opera with our community, and seeing the joy it brings to people’s faces. That’s what keeps us going.” – Joseph Calleja, Founder, Opera Nova Project
