Two Years of Melodious Magic: Celebrating Opera Nova Project

Imagine the echoes of a powerful aria resonating through the ancient stone walls of the Teatru Manoel, Malta’s national theatre. This is not a dream, but a reality thanks to the Opera Nova Project, which has been filling our island’s air with the enchanting melodies of opera for the past two years.

From Concept to Reality

The Opera Nova Project was born out of a desire to bring world-class opera performances to Malta, making this art form accessible to a wider audience. Launched in 2020, the project is a collaboration between Teatru Manoel and the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), with the support of the Malta Arts Council.

Over the past two years, Opera Nova has presented a diverse range of operas, from classic favourites like ‘La Traviata’ and ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ to lesser-known gems such as ‘The Love for Three Oranges’ and ‘The Barber of Seville’. Each performance has been a testament to the power of opera to captivate, inspire, and bring communities together.

Local Talent Shines Bright

One of the standout features of the Opera Nova Project is its commitment to nurturing and showcasing local talent. Many of the performances have featured Maltese singers, conductors, and musicians, providing them with a platform to showcase their skills on a national stage.

Take, for instance, Maltese tenor Joseph Zammit, who wowed audiences in last year’s production of ‘La Bohème’. Or the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, which has consistently delivered exceptional performances under the baton of principal conductor Michael Laus. These local artists, along with many others, have been integral to the success of the Opera Nova Project.

: A Symphony of Success

The Opera Nova Project has not only enriched Malta’s cultural scene but has also contributed to its tourism industry. Opera lovers from around the world have flocked to our shores to experience these extraordinary performances, boosting our economy and putting Malta on the global opera map.

As we celebrate the project’s second anniversary, we look forward to many more years of operatic excellence. The upcoming season promises a thrilling lineup, including ‘Carmen’ and ‘The Magic Flute’, which are sure to captivate audiences and create lasting memories.

In the words of Teatru Manoel’s artistic director, Kenneth Zammit Tabona, “Opera Nova has shown that there is a strong appetite for opera in Malta. We are committed to building on this success and ensuring that opera continues to thrive on our island.”

So, mark your calendars, opera lovers. The show is about to begin, and it’s going to be a symphony of success.
