Mġarr Cyclist Fight for Life After Accident

Cyclist’s Fight for Life: Mġarr Accident Shakes Local Community

Under the unforgiving Maltese sun, a lone bicycle lay mangled on Triq San Pawl, its twisted frame a stark contrast to the vibrant bougainvillea that lines the street. This was the scene last Tuesday, following an accident that left a local cyclist critically injured and the Mġarr community reeling.

What Happened?

At around 10:30 AM, 35-year-old cyclist, Matthew Gauci, was riding towards Mġarr’s bustling market when a car, allegedly speeding, lost control and struck him. Witnesses reported the car, a silver Ford Fiesta, skidding before colliding with Gauci, sending him crashing onto the pavement. The driver, a 28-year-old man from nearby Xagħra, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and dangerous driving.

Gauci, a father of two and a passionate cyclist, was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital with severe head injuries and multiple fractures. He remains in the intensive care unit, fighting for his life. The accident has left the tight-knit Mġarr community devastated, with many expressing their support for Gauci and his family.

Mġarr: A Cycling Haven Under Threat

Mġarr, with its winding country roads and scenic coastal views, has long been a haven for cyclists. However, the increase in traffic and incidents like this one have raised concerns about safety. “We’re seeing more and more cyclists on the roads, but the infrastructure and driver awareness haven’t kept pace,” says Mark Bonnici, a local cycling enthusiast and founder of the Mġarr Cycling Club.

Bonnici points to the lack of dedicated cycling lanes and inadequate signage as major issues. “We need more education for drivers and better road design to protect cyclists,” he adds. The Mġarr Local Council has echoed these sentiments, promising to push for improved cycling infrastructure.

Community Rallies Around Gauci

The outpouring of support for Gauci has been overwhelming. A GoFundMe page set up to help his family has already surpassed its €10,000 target. Meanwhile, the Mġarr Cycling Club has organized a charity ride, with cyclists from across Malta set to ride in Gauci’s honor this Sunday, starting from Triq San Pawl.

“We want to show Matthew and his family that we’re all thinking of him,” says Bonnici. “And we want to send a strong message that cyclists deserve to be safe on our roads.”

The driver involved in the accident has been released on police bail pending further investigations. The Malta Police Force urges anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
