Opera Nova Project Celebrates Two Glorious Years

Under the Spotlight: Opera Nova Project’s Glittering Two-Year Milestone

Imagine the echo of a powerful aria bouncing off the ancient walls of St. John’s Co-Cathedral. This isn’t a dream, but a reality thanks to the Opera Nova Project. Now, two years into its journey, it’s time to take a bow and celebrate its remarkable achievements.

A Symphony of Culture and Community

The Opera Nova Project was born in 2019, a brainchild of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) and Teatru Manoel, Malta’s national theatre. Their vision? To bring opera to the heart of Malta’s communities, making this art form accessible to all. And what a journey it’s been!

From the grandeur of the Manoel Theatre in Valletta to the intimate setting of St. Catherine’s Church in Żebbuġ, the project has transformed churches, palaces, and even a 17th-century fort into opera houses. Each performance has been a testament to the power of culture to unite and inspire.

The Magic of Malta’s Historic Stages

One of the project’s standout moments was the 2020 production of ‘La Traviata’ at the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta. The opulent setting provided a dramatic backdrop to Verdi’s masterpiece, with the MPO’s musicians hidden behind the palace’s grand windows. It was opera like never before, a truly unique Maltese experience.

But it’s not just about the spectacle. The Opera Nova Project has also been committed to nurturing local talent. It has provided a platform for Maltese singers, musicians, and technicians to shine, giving them the chance to perform alongside international artists.

: A New Act

As the project enters its third year, it’s set to continue breaking boundaries. Plans are afoot for more innovative productions, including a site-specific opera set in the historic Fort St. Elmo. Plus, there’s a new initiative to engage schools, introducing Malta’s youngsters to the magic of opera.

Dr. Brian Schembri, CEO of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, sums it up: “The Opera Nova Project has shown that opera can thrive in unexpected spaces, reaching new audiences and fostering a love for this art form. We’re just getting started.”

So, mark your calendars, Malta. The Opera Nova Project is about to write its next chapter. And you won’t want to miss it.
