Turandot Triumphs in Malta

‘Turandot’, Against All Odds: A Maltese Opera Triumph

Imagine, if you will, the grand Teatru Astra in the heart of Victoria, Gozo, on a chilly February evening. The theatre, a gem of Maltese architecture, is buzzing with an unusual energy. Tonight, it’s not just any opera performance; it’s the debut of ‘Turandot’ by Giacomo Puccini, a monumental task for any opera company, let alone a local one.

An Opera Giant Awakens

Puccini’s ‘Turandot’, with its intricate score and demanding roles, is a behemoth in the opera world. It’s a tale of love, power, and riddles set in ancient China, requiring a vast orchestra, elaborate sets, and singers at the peak of their careers. Yet, here we are, in little Malta, about to witness a local production that’s daring to take on this opera giant.

The Malta Opera Company (MOC), a relatively young ensemble, is behind this ambitious venture. Led by the dynamic duo of artistic director Colin Attard and conductor Michael Laus, the company has been quietly making waves in Malta’s cultural scene. But this? This is something else entirely.

Local Talent Shines Bright

Maltese opera lovers are in for a treat. The lead roles are taken by local talents who have honed their craft both here and abroad. Soprano Miriam Gauci takes on the titular role of Princess Turandot, a character as complex as she is demanding. Tenor Joseph Zammit is Prince Calaf, the man who dares to win Turandot’s heart. Baritone Joseph Debrincat plays the enigmatic Timur, and mezzo-soprano Bernice Sammut Attard is the slave girl Liù, who secretly loves Calaf.

But it’s not just the principals who deserve praise. The chorus and orchestra are filled with Maltese musicians who have risen to the challenge. The chorus, under the direction of Fiona Gauci, is a powerful force, their voices filling the theatre with a rich, resonant sound. The orchestra, led by Michael Laus, brings Puccini’s score to life with sensitivity and skill.

Against the Odds

Putting on ‘Turandot’ is no easy feat. The opera requires a massive stage set, including a palace facade and a moonlit garden. It needs a large orchestra, with a harp, timpani, and even a Chinese gong. It needs singers who can handle Puccini’s demanding music and deliver powerful performances in Italian.

But the MOC has risen to the challenge. The sets, designed by Italian scenographer Andrea Belli, are stunning. The costumes, by Maltese designer Charles Azzopardi, are a feast for the eyes. And the music? Well, that speaks for itself.

In a world where it’s easy to be cynical, where we often hear about what can’t be done, here’s a story about what can. About a small island that’s punching above its weight, about local talent shining on a global stage, about an opera company that’s daring to dream big.

So, if you’re in Malta or Gozo, do yourself a favour. Head to Teatru Astra. Listen to the music soar, watch the story unfold, and witness, firsthand, the magic that happens when people dare to dream, dare to create, dare to sing.

Turandot runs at Teatru Astra, Victoria, Gozo, from 18-20 February 2022. Tickets are available from Showshappening.
