Żurrieq Residents: “No Way, Nigret!”

Imagine standing on the edge of the Dingli Cliffs, the wind whipping your hair, the vast blue sea stretching out before you. Now, picture a massive development blocking that view. That’s the reality Żurrieq residents are fighting to prevent. The Nigret development plans, proposed by DB Group, aim to build luxury apartments and a five-star hotel on a hill overlooking the picturesque village and the sea beyond.

Why the Outcry?

Żurrieq, a village known for its traditional charm and rural beauty, is up in arms against these plans. Residents argue that the development will not only mar the scene but also overwhelm the village’s infrastructure. “We’re talking about a massive increase in traffic, strain on our water and electricity supplies, and a loss of our rural identity,” says Joseph Xuereb, a Żurrieq resident and one of the leading voices against the project.

The proposed site, located just off Triq il-Kuncizzjoni, is also a popular spot for hikers and nature lovers. Environmental concerns are high on the agenda, with fears that the development could lead to soil erosion and damage to the local ecosystem.

Legal Battles and Petitions

The fight against the Nigret development has been ongoing for years. In 2019, Żurrieq Local Council filed a judicial protest against the Planning Authority’s approval of the project. The case is still pending. Meanwhile, a petition started by Żurrieq residents has gathered thousands of signatures, both locally and internationally.

“We’ve had support from all over Malta and even from Maltese living abroad,” says Maria Camilleri, another Żurrieq resident involved in the campaign. “People understand that this isn’t just about Żurrieq. It’s about preserving Malta’s rural heritage for future generations.”

What’s Next?

The battle is far from over. DB Group has submitted a revised proposal, which residents argue is still too large and too close to the village. The Planning Authority is expected to make a decision soon, and all eyes are on Triq il-Kuncizzjoni, where the future of Żurrieq hangs in the balance.

Xuereb sums up the sentiment of Żurrieq residents: “We’re not against development, but we’re against development that destroys our village and our way of life. We’re fighting for Żurrieq, and we’re not giving up.”
