3 Women Arrested in Major Drug Trafficking Operation
Three Women Detained in Major Drug Trafficking Operation
Early morning raids in Msida and Birkirkara left three women in custody today, as police seized a significant amount of drugs suspected to be part of a larger trafficking operation. The arrests, part of a months-long investigation, have through the local drug scene, with police vowing to continue their crackdown on illegal activities.
Raids Uncover Cocaine and Cannabis
In a coordinated operation, police raided two properties – a terraced house in Msida’s Triq il-Kunsill and an apartment in Birkirkara’s Triq San Ġorġ – seizing cocaine and cannabis with an estimated street value of €50,000. The drugs were found hidden in the properties, with police also seizing mobile phones and other paraphernalia believed to be linked to the trafficking operation.
Women Arrested and Charged
The three women, aged 25, 32, and 45, were arrested and charged with trafficking, possession, and intent to supply. They were taken to the police headquarters in Floriana for further questioning. The 25-year-old, a Maltese national, is believed to be the ringleader of the operation, with the other two women acting as her associates.
Superintendent of Police, Keith Mercieca, praised the work of the drug squad, stating, “This operation sends a clear message to those involved in drug trafficking. We will not tolerate this activity in our communities, and we will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle these operations.”
In a separate development, the police also arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with the case. He was found in possession of a small amount of cannabis and is believed to have been a customer of the trafficking operation.
This is the latest in a series of high-profile drug busts in Malta, with police continuing to target drug trafficking networks across the islands. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the police on 119 or anonymously through the ‘Stop Crime Malta’ app.
Community Reactions and Support
Local residents have reacted with relief to the arrests, with many expressing their support for the police’s efforts to combat drug trafficking in their communities. “We’ve been worried about this for a while,” said one Msida resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s good to see the police taking action and making our streets safer.”
Community leaders have also praised the police operation, with the mayor of Birkirkara, John Boxall, stating, “We are committed to working with the police to keep our town safe. These arrests send a strong message that drug trafficking will not be tolerated in Birkirkara.”
As the investigation continues, the three women remain in custody, with their cases set to be heard in court in the coming weeks. The police have not ruled out further arrests in connection with the case.
In a call to action, Superintendent Mercieca urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police. “We cannot do this alone,” he said. “We need the support of the community to help us tackle drug trafficking and make our streets safer for everyone.”
