Mount Carmel Nurses Warn of Patient Safety Risks in Refurbished Garden
Nurses’ Warning: Mount Carmel’s Refurbished Garden Could Put Patients at Risk
Imagine this: a patient, frail and disoriented, wanders out of the refurbished garden at Mount Carmel Hospital, Malta’s largest public healthcare facility. This isn’t a scene from a horror film, but a very real possibility, according to nurses who have raised alarm bells about the newly revamped space.
Mount Carmel’s garden, a green lung in the heart of Msida, has undergone a facelift. The €250,000 project, part of the hospital’s modernization drive, aimed to create a serene, therapeutic environment for patients. However, nurses are now warning that the refurbishment, with its new layout and features, could be putting patients’ safety at risk.
New Layout, Old Concerns
The garden’s redesign has introduced new pathways, seating areas, and even a small pond. While aesthetically pleasing, nurses argue that these features are causing confusion among patients, particularly the elderly and those with dementia. The new layout, they say, makes it easier for patients to wander off and get lost.
“We’ve had instances where patients have managed to escape from the garden,” says a nurse who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s only a matter of time before something serious happens.”
Mount Carmel’s Response
Mount Carmel Hospital has dismissed the nurses’ concerns, insisting that the garden is safe and that measures are in place to prevent patients from wandering off. The hospital’s CEO, Dr. Ivan Falzon, told Hot Malta, “We have taken all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our patients. The garden is enclosed, and staff are trained to monitor patients closely.”
However, nurses maintain that the current measures are not enough. They are calling for additional safety features, such as higher fences and CCTV cameras, to be installed in the garden.
“We understand a pleasant environment for our patients,” says the anonymous nurse. “But not at the expense of their safety. We just want to ensure that our patients are protected, both from harm and from themselves.”
: A Balanced Approach
The refurbished garden at Mount Carmel Hospital is a testament to the hospital’s commitment to improving patient care. However, it also underscores the delicate balance that must be struck between aesthetics and safety, especially in healthcare facilities. As nurses continue to raise their concerns, it is crucial that the hospital listens and takes appropriate action to ensure that the garden remains a place of tranquility, not a potential escape route for vulnerable patients.
As one nurse put it, “We want our patients to enjoy the garden, to find peace and comfort in its beauty. But we also want them to be safe. Isn’t that the least we can do?”
