Abela Challenges PL: ‘It’s Either Me or Alex Borg’
Abela’s PL Mass Meeting: “It’s Either Me or Alex Borg. Who Do You Trust?”
Malta’s political scene was abuzz last night as Prime Minister Robert Abela addressed a packed Labour Party (PL) mass meeting at the MFCC in Ta’ Qali. The venue, usually echoing with the hum of motorsports, was filled with the thunderous applause of party faithful, as Abela delivered a speech that had been eagerly anticipated by both supporters and critics alike.
Abela’s Direct Challenge
In a move that caught many by surprise, Abela directly addressed the elephant in the room – the ongoing leadership struggle within the PL. In a clear reference to former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s chief of staff, Keith Schembri, and his close associate, former Minister Konrad Mizzi, Abela asked the crowd, “It’s either me or Alex Borg. Who do you trust more?” The crowd’s resounding response, “Abela!”, echoed through the vast exhibition centre, leaving no doubt about their allegiance.
Abela’s challenge comes amidst growing calls for accountability and reform within the PL, following the aftermath of the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder and the subsequent revelations of corruption within the party. By positioning himself as the trustworthy alternative to Schembri and Mizzi, Abela is attempting to distance himself from the scandals that have engulfed the PL in recent years.
Reform and Renewal
Abela’s speech focused heavily on the need for reform and renewal within the PL. He pledged to “clean up” the party, promising to root out corruption and ensure accountability. He also announced a series of reforms, including the introduction of a new code of ethics for party members and the establishment of an independent body to oversee the party’s finances.
Abela’s commitment to reform was welcomed by many within the PL, who have been calling for change for some time. However, some critics have questioned whether Abela’s promises go far enough, and whether he has the political will to truly clean up the party.
With the PL’s annual general conference just around the corner, Abela’s speech was seen by many as a precursor to his expected re-election as party leader. However, with Schembri and Mizzi still holding significant influence within the party, Abela’s path to re-election is far from guaranteed.
As one party member told Hot Malta, “Abela has made a strong start, but the real test will come at the conference. If he can’t deliver on his promises, he risks losing the trust of the party faithful.”
whether Abela’s challenge will be enough to secure his position as PL leader and drive the party towards a new era of reform and renewal. One thing is certain, though – the political drama in Malta is far from over.
