Armier Turtle Rescue: A Community Effort

Turtle Tale: A Race Against Time in Little Armier

Imagine, if you will, the sun-kissed shores of Little Armier, where the Mediterranean’s turquoise waters gently lap against the Maltese limestone. It’s a typical summer day, with tourists and locals alike soaking up the sun. But today, there’s an unusual commotion. A group of Life Guards and Nature Trust volunteers are huddled around something in the shallow water, their faces etched with concern.

At the heart of the gathering lies the reason for the stir: a loggerhead sea turtle, its shell covered in barnacles, struggling to keep its head above water. It’s clear that this isn’t just another day at the beach. This is a race against time.

Rescue Mission: The Call to Action

Life Guards, ever vigilant, were the first to spot the turtle in distress. They quickly alerted the Nature Trust, who dispatched a team of volunteers to assist. The turtle, estimated to be around 30 years old, was entangled in a fishing net, its movements slowed by the weight and restriction.

“We received a call around 11 am,” says Dr. Jason Falzon, a vet and Nature Trust volunteer. “The turtle was in a critical state, exhausted and dehydrated. We knew we had to act fast.”

Operation Turtle Turn: A Community Effort

The rescue mission was no easy feat. The turtle, measuring over a meter in length, was heavy and cumbersome. Carefully, the Life Guards and volunteers worked together, gently cutting away the net from the turtle’s shell and flippers. The turtle, sensing the help, remained surprisingly calm throughout the operation.

Once freed, the turtle was carefully placed on a stretcher and transported to the Nature Trust’s clinic in Rabat for further examination and treatment. The community, having witnessed the rescue, cheered and applauded the efforts of the Life Guards and volunteers.

“It was a real team effort,” says Mark Micallef, a Life Guard involved in the rescue. “From the initial call to the final cut of the net, everyone played their part. It’s what makes our community so special.”

Aftermath: A New Lease on Life

Back at the clinic, Dr. Falzon and his team began the process of rehabilitating the turtle. They named her ‘Armiera’, after the bay where she was rescued. After a thorough examination, it was discovered that Armiera had a cracked shell, likely due to the strain of the net and the struggle to free herself.

Over the next few weeks, Armiera will receive specialized care, including a diet of fish and squid, and a daily swim in a saltwater pool to aid her recovery. Once she’s strong enough, she’ll be released back into the wild, her tale of survival a testament to the power of community action.

This isn’t the first time that Life Guards and Nature Trust volunteers have come together to save a marine creature in distress. But each rescue, each life saved, is a reminder of the importance of their work and the need for continued vigilance and conservation efforts.

As for Armiera, her future looks bright. With the dedicated care of the Nature Trust team and the support of the local community, she stands a fighting chance. And that, in itself, is a cause for celebration.
