District 3: The New Fearne Fever?

District 3 Profile: A Repeat of Fearne Fever?

It’s a sunny afternoon in Msida, and the usually bustling streets around the University of Malta are eerily quiet. The reason? Thousands of students have decamped to the newly opened District 3, a state-of-the-art student village that’s got everyone talking. But is it the new ‘Fearne fever’? Let’s look the hype and find out.

What is District 3?

District 3 is the brainchild of Trident Estates, a local property development company. Nestled in the heart of Msida, it’s a self-contained student village that offers accommodation, retail spaces, and recreational facilities all under one roof. It’s the first of its kind in Malta, and it’s causing quite a stir.

From the outside, District 3 is an imposing structure, its modern design a stark contrast to the traditional Maltese architecture that surrounds it. But it’s what’s inside that’s really got people buzzing. With over 500 beds, a rooftop pool, a gym, a supermarket, and even a nightclub, it’s like a mini city within a city.

Fearne Fever Redux?

Back in 2016, the opening of the University of Malta’s new student residence, Fearne Hall, caused a sensation. Students flocked to the modern, self-catering accommodation, and the term ‘Fearne fever’ was coined to describe the phenomenon. So, the question on everyone’s lips is: is District 3 set to become the new Fearne?

On the surface, the two developments have a lot in common. Both offer modern, self-catering accommodation, both have state-of-the-art facilities, and both are located close to the University of Malta. But there are also some key differences.

District 3: A Closer Look

While Fearne Hall is a traditional student residence, District 3 is a student village. This means it’s not just a place to sleep; it’s a community. There are shared spaces, like the rooftop pool and the communal kitchen, where students can socialise and connect. There are also retail spaces, which will house everything from a supermarket to a pharmacy, making it a one-stop shop for students.

But perhaps the most talked-about feature of District 3 is its nightclub. Located on the top floor, it offers panoramic views of Msida and beyond. It’s set to become a hotspot for students and locals alike, with a calendar of events that promises to keep the party going all year round.

But while the perks of living in District 3 are undeniable, there are also some potential drawbacks. The most pressing is the cost. With rooms starting at €7,000 for a 9-month lease, it’s significantly more expensive than traditional student accommodation. Then there’s the issue of integration. With all amenities on-site, there’s a risk that students might not fully integrate into the local community.

What Do the Students Think?

We spoke to a few students who have made the move to District 3, and the consensus is positive. “It’s like living in a resort,” says Maria, a first-year law student. “I love the facilities, and it’s so convenient. I can roll out of bed and be in a lecture in five minutes.”

But not everyone is sold. “I think it’s great for international students, but it’s too expensive for locals,” says Daniel, a second-year engineering student. “And I miss the community feel of living in a traditional residence. Here, it’s all a bit too… commercial.”

What’s Next for District 3?

Despite the mixed reviews, District 3 is here to stay. Trident Estates has plans to expand the development, adding more retail spaces and even a hotel. The nightclub, meanwhile, is set to open its doors in the coming months, promising to add a new dimension to Msida’s nightlife.

But as District 3 continues to grow, it’s important to remember that it’s not just a student village; it’s a part of the Msida community. And like any community, it’s a work in progress. With input from students, locals, and the university, District 3 has the potential to be more than just a repeat of Fearne fever. It could be something truly unique.

As one student put it, “District 3 is more than just a place to live. It’s a new chapter for Msida, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.”
