As the sun sets over the man-made marvels of Dubai, casting a golden glow on the Burj Khalifa, an unusual scene unfolds. While the rest of the Middle East grapples with the fallout of the Yemen war, the Dubai International Art Centre (DIAC) is abuzz with the annual Dubai Art Fair. This year, the event is a testament to the resilience of art and culture in the face of regional conflict.

A Haven for Art Amidst Turmoil

The Dubai Art Fair, now in its 12th edition, has become a staple on the global art calendar. This year, however, it’s a poignant reminder of the power of art to transcend borders and conflicts. The fair, held at the DIAC’s sprawling complex in the heart of Dubai, is a vibrant hub of creativity, drawing artists and art enthusiasts from across the globe.

Among the exhibitors is Maltese artist Alexia Cassar, who has set up her stall under the fair’s ‘Emerging Artists’ section. Her bold, abstract paintings, inspired by the rugged Maltese coastline, stand out amidst the diverse artworks on display. “Art is a universal language,” Cassar says, “It’s our way of communicating peace and unity, even when the world around us is at war.”

Art as a Diplomatic Tool

The Dubai Art Fair is more than just a commercial event. It’s a platform for cultural diplomacy, a chance for the UAE to showcase its soft power. This year, the fair features a special section dedicated to Yemeni art, a stark reminder of the conflict raging just across the Gulf.

Dr. Ahmad bin Sulaiman, the fair’s director, believes that art can play a crucial role in conflict resolution. “Art has the power to bring people together, to foster understanding and dialogue,” he says. “In times of conflict, it’s more important than ever to support and promote art and culture.”

Malta’s Connection: Art as a Bridge

Malta, with its rich artistic heritage and strategic location, has long been a bridge between East and West. The Dubai Art Fair provides an opportunity for Maltese artists to connect with the Middle East, to learn from each other, and to foster cultural exchange.

Cassar’s presence at the fair is a testament to this connection. Her art, inspired by the rugged Maltese coastline, finds an unlikely home in the desert metropolis of Dubai. “Malta and Dubai might seem worlds apart,” Cassar says, “But art has the power to bridge these gaps, to bring us together.”

Back in Malta, the Muża, the National Community Art Museum, is planning a series of exhibitions inspired by the Middle East. The first, ‘Desert Blooms’, is set to open later this year, further cementing Malta’s cultural ties with the region.
