FACT’s Founder Jesmond Pace Retires: A Chapter Closes in Malta’s Tech Scene

In the heart of Malta’s Silicon Hub, at the corner of Triq Il-Kbira in Msida, the FACT logo on the building’s facade has been a constant for over two decades. Today, that chapter comes to a close as founder Jesmond Pace announces his retirement.

From Humble Beginnings to Tech Titan

Jesmond Pace started FACT, or Foundation for Creative Technology, in 1998. Back then, Malta’s tech scene was in its infancy. Pace, a visionary with a degree in Computer Science from the University of Malta, saw the potential in the tiny island nation. He started FACT as a non-profit, aiming to foster creativity and innovation through technology.

FACT’s first home was a small office in Paceville. It was here that Pace and his team started Malta’s first internet service provider, IsleNet. They also launched the first local internet portal, MaltaOnline, which became a go-to platform for news and information in the late 90s.

Growing Pains and Milestones

As Malta’s tech industry grew, so did FACT. The organization moved to its current location in Msida, a stone’s throw from the University of Malta. Here, Pace and his team expanded their work, launching initiatives like the Malta Digital Games Fund and the StartupMalta platform.

FACT’s impact on Malta’s tech scene is undeniable. It has incubated and supported numerous startups, many of which have gone on to become major players in their respective fields. It has also been a driving force behind Malta’s bid to become a digital hub in the Mediterranean.

A New Chapter Dawns

Pace’s retirement marks the end of an era, but it also signals a new beginning. FACT’s board has appointed Dr. Ing. Joseph Fenech as the new executive director. Fenech, a seasoned tech professional with a PhD in Computer Science, is no stranger to FACT, having served on the board for several years.

“Jesmond’s retirement is a significant moment for FACT and Malta’s tech scene,” says Fenech. “But we’re ready to take on the challenge. We’ll continue Jesmond’s vision, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in Malta’s tech industry.”

Pace, meanwhile, is looking forward to his retirement. “It’s been an incredible journey,” he says. “But it’s time for me to step back and let the next generation take the reins. I have no doubt that FACT will continue to thrive under Joseph’s leadership.”
