Farewell Felicity Lott: Malta Mourns Global Opera Star
Farewell to a Global Star: Felicity Lott’s Maltese Connection
As the sun set over the Grand Harbour last night, news reached Malta of the passing of British soprano Felicity Lott. Aged 79, the renowned opera singer left behind a legacy that echoed far beyond the Mediterranean, yet her connection to our islands was deeply personal.
From London to Valletta: A Shared History
Born in Kent, England, Lott’s career spanned over five decades, gracing the world’s most prestigious opera houses and concert halls. Yet, Malta held a special place in her heart. Her first visit to the island was in the 1970s, performing at the Manoel Theatre, a venue she would return to numerous times throughout her career.
In 2014, Lott was awarded the insignia of Knight of Grace of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a testament to her deep connection with our islands. She was no stranger to the Maltese public, her performances always met with standing ovations, her voice resonating in the very air we breathe.
Remembering Lott in Malta
Malta’s cultural scene is mourning the loss of a global star who was also a friend. “She was a true professional, always a pleasure to work with,” recalls Joseph Zammit, former artistic director of the Malta International Music Festival. “Her voice, her charisma, her humility – she was a true inspiration.”
Lott’s influence can still be felt today. The Malta International Music Festival, held annually in June, continues to attract world-class musicians, a legacy Lott helped build. This year’s festival, scheduled for the 17th to the 25th of June, will undoubtedly be a poignant reminder of her contribution.
Lott’s Malta: A Personal Touch
Beyond the stage, Lott was known to enjoy Malta’s quieter moments. She often stayed at the historic Phoenicia Hotel in Floriana, where she would relax by the pool or stroll along the nearby streets. “She loved the history, the architecture, the people,” remembers the hotel’s manager, Mario Schembri. “She was always eager to explore more of Malta.”
Lott’s passing leaves a void in Malta’s cultural scene, but her spirit lives on in the music that filled our theatres and the memories she shared with our people. As we remember her, let us also celebrate her life and the joy she brought to our islands.
Rest in peace, Felicity Lott. Your voice may have fallen silent, but your music will forever echo in Malta’s heart.
