Imagine this: you’re driving along the Marsa Industrial Estate, the heart of Malta’s manufacturing sector, when suddenly, a fire breaks out in one of the factories. The fire brigade is on its way, but the blaze is spreading fast. Who’s going to ensure the safety of the workers and the surrounding area until the professionals arrive?

That’s where the Civil Protection Department’s (CPD) new fleet of vehicles comes in. Hot off the assembly line, these shiny new additions are set to revolutionise how Malta responds to industrial incidents. Let’s take a closer look under the hood.

New Vehicles, New Capabilities

The CPD has invested in a range of new vehicles, each designed to tackle different aspects of industrial incidents. From fire-resistant clothing to advanced breathing apparatus, these vehicles are kitted out with state-of-the-art equipment to protect our responders and enhance their capabilities.

    • Multi-purpose vehicles: These versatile vehicles, equipped with foam and water cannons, can tackle fires and chemical spills alike. They’re set to become a familiar sight patrolling the streets of Birkirkara and other industrial hubs.
    • Rescue vehicles: With their hydraulic rescue tools and specialist cutting equipment, these vehicles are designed to extricate workers from dangerous situations. They’re a lifeline in emergencies, ensuring no one is left behind.
    • Command vehicles: These mobile command centres bring the CPD’s incident management capabilities to the scene. Equipped with communication tools and mapping software, they help coordinate responses in real-time.

Training Wheels Off: Preparing for Action

But new vehicles are only as good as the people who drive them. The CPD is pulling out all the stops to ensure its teams are ready to hit the ground running. From intensive driver training at the Ta’ Qali National Sports Complex to specialist courses on industrial incident response, our responders are honing their skills.

CPD Director, Colonel David Baldacchino, told Hot Malta, “These vehicles are a breakthrough. But it’s not just about the hardware. It’s about the people. We’re investing in our teams, giving them the training and tools they need to keep Malta safe.”

: A Safer Malta

The CPD’s new fleet is set to transform industrial incident response across Malta. From the bustling streets of Ħamrun to the quiet corners of Mġarr, these vehicles are a visible commitment to keeping our communities safe.

But the CPD can’t do it alone. Businesses and individuals have a crucial role to play. Regular safety checks, emergency drills, and open communication with the CPD can all help prevent incidents and save lives.

As Colonel Baldacchino puts it, “Safety is a shared responsibility. Together, we can make Malta a safer place for all.”
